Transferable finance skills

Background:
Graduated last year with a 2:1 Mechanical Engineering Masters degree.
I knew engineering wasn't for me having done a placement in my sandwich year so didn't pursue it and kept my options open to most things.
Got a lucky break through a recruitment agency and now work in Banking (Project Finance).
Since I decided I didn't want to do engineering, I haven't really known what it is that I do want to do, however, I'm not sure I want to get stuck in Project Finance - getting lots of training and earning decent money, however, the longer I'm there and the more I'm paid, the harder I'll find it to move to a different industry (in my inexperienced opinion).

My question:
How transferable are various areas of finance? Obviously at a young age I don't want to be trapped in something I'm not sure about and I will still be giving my current job 100% but want to keep my options open for further moves. Still not sure what it is I do want to do but I'm pretty sure it's finance/business related.

I'm a 44 year old Chartered Manufacturing Engineer with 22 year experience including being a CAT certified Black Belt.
I'm working as a Ltd company contractor in the most successful UK aerospace company in the East midlands doing lean / quality improvement projects.

My daily rate is at least 1/2 (if not 1/3) that if I had any banking experience whatsoever.

That is a six sigma black belt in banking on a ltd company contract can expect £500 to £650 a day, and a Six sigma black belt not in banking is looking at £220 to £250 a day (although I do 10 hour days so it's a touch more)

My conclusion is that you picked the right industry, now find an interesting job that you enjoy and that challenges you.

Easier said than done unfortunately The 'interesting bit' is the bit that's doing me at the moment...

A Japanese commercial bank - I'm still a temp having worked up from a 3 month internship (due to go permanent in the near future).

I don't know how the Jap banks work as I've only worked ever for UK owned banks. IMO, your best best is to get some a chunk of continuous experiance under your belt and then see what takes your fancy. 3 months isn't a long time in your career and you'll have plenty of time to work out how to move if you want to.

Indeed, not planning on chopping it in now, the 3 months was the internship, been here 7 months now so definitely not long enough to make a decision but at the same time, I want to keep my options open, hence the question on whether the skills in my current role will be easily transferable to other areas? I'm hoping the answer is yes so I can stay here, gain more experience and then see what I fancy in a good 6-12 months time.
