So who was getting escorted by a half-dozen police-bike out-riders and some high-end black saloons, one of which was flying the yellow Scottish lion-rampant flag on it's bonnet?
Wednesday tea-time Great Western Road, Old Kilpatrick east-bound then later seen east-bound in the "Edinburgh lanes" of the M8 Easterhouse.

Saw the very same thing at Charing Cross, back of 5. 4 or 5 bikes clearing traffic, then 2 what looked like S Class Merc's, however could have been the new E, followed by X5 and I think another 2 bikes.

Did you notice the Mercs had no rear number plate? I didnt get a chance to see if they had fronts?

Could well have been that trumpet Alex Salmond.

Sounds like the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Third most senior person in Scotland this week after the Queen and the Duke Of Edinburgh. As personal representative of the Queen he stays at the Palace of Holyroodhouse while his official car bears the Royal Standard of Scotland, no numberplates and a police escort.

Edit: He was due to visit the church in Luss yesterday then return for an evening reception in Edinburgh last night. So almost certainly him then.

Seemed to be particularly high security levels around there yesterday.

This was a seriously close thing for me.

I came scorching up the slip road from Bellshill in a real hurry onto the A8 pulling 5k in 3rd in the Quattro and just about to take to the outside lane when I clocked the blue lights in the offside mirror; dozens of them!

Instant lift off the throttle to be taken by no less than 6 bikes, then a Mercedes S class, no plates, another s class long wheel base flying the lion rampant, another two bikes and finally a BMW X5!

I followed them all the way into Glasgow and they stuck to 70.

I take it the massive security for a church leader is due to the current publicity over religious intolerance and bigotry. What a sad day when a minister needs this level of security.

He is not a minister or church leader.

He (or she) is the representative of the monarch, and is second in 'rank' only to the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh. They have precedence over members of the Royal family etc. They are also allowed a car without a number plate, for the week.

The convoy etc would be similar to one give to the Queen.

Quite ironic, all this security for someone that I personally have never heard of, never knew existed and wouldn't know him from Adam if I walked past him in the street!

(I would know Adam thoughsmile

Old guy, no clothes, fig leaf? Eating an apple?
I agree, I've never heard of this supposed VIP. Does he have a name? Why are we spending the amount of money it must have cost to furnish a top security escort for somebody nobody's heard of? Is this the polis playing or just an ego trip for Mr X?
Sound like complete bks to me.

No the level of security is the same or at least similar as the level of security for the queen, as he is (for the week at least) the representative of the queen.

The role of the Lord High Commissioner is ofeten performed by a differetn person each year, though the same guy did it this year and last and some others recently have done it twice (or maybe more).
