had a landscape gardener quoted me £150.00 for removal and disposal of 65ft of hedge (about 7ft tall 2ft wide) quite twiggy although this year its burst into pink flowers. The guy never arrived yesterday and now not picking his phone up, wanted to get it removed for me to plant new hedges (which i have already bought and were delivered last week. Been looking around for some other people to do it but at this late notice its prices of around £1000-1500.

Was thinking maybe i should do it myself, hire one of these http://www.hss.com/g/47205/Mini-Skid-Steer-Loader....

and possibly a shredder or perhaps just get a 6yard skip and dump the lot of it?

the bushes are close to next doors block paving and pulling them up with the digger concerns me as i might end up pulling his paving up if the roots have gone under there.

Think its doable? i think the digger although not cheap will make light work off them, especially if i cut them down then use the digger to take them up.

yeah thats something that i would like to do, i dont think the lorry would get to the side of the garden, my concern is the neighbours block paving more than anything else.

to be honest I dont know what it is, (off I go to google images with the name you have suggested), its a bit straggy so in winter donest give us much privacy and we are on the corner so as cars go pass they can see right in, i was going to replace it with laurel to match the other side.

£150 to remove all that? I think your pik............erm, landscape gardener realised what he'd let himself in for and chickened out. Just as well really, you know it was only going to end up in a lay-by.

I don't envy you the job. I've done similar on a smaller scale and I hated every minute of it.

Strip back until you can get to the trunks.
Cut off at the main trunk on each individual bush leaving enough in case you have to lever them out.
Dig around the roots and pull out.
Either burn, or shred then into a skip.

Don't wear a t shirt though.. Made that mistake and my arms ended up ruined!

yeah that was my train of thought also, i think it looks worse than it is in some palces the hedges are very thin (probably 1ft thick) others there alittle more bushy, cant have bornfires round here, upset the neighbours when we first moved in and they called the fire service who quickly sent 5 firemen to my house with lights flashing etc, much to my embarressment!!

Haha I'm not sure how much It costs to rent a shredder? Would probably be worth doing though otherwise you'll pay a fortune In skips.. So the cost pretty much pays for Itself smile

What are you, a man or an amoeba?! £50 chainsaw, or a £10 bow saw. Cut off just below the growth, hack out with mattock. The work of an afternoon.

sorry one other question why i think of it i was goign to buy a ton of tosoil/soil conditioner for the new hedges, do you think a ton is excessive for a 65ft run, maybe half ton would be better, only £20.00 difference in the prices.
