Per last night's "Manchester Evening News!" (20/05/04 - Reporter - Dean Kirby)

"A new speed camera was cut down before it had even been switched on.

"But Kathleen S, whose elderly mother hade ver recovered from being knocked down at this spot in 1994 said: "We need that camera. It could save lives!"

"Passers-by were astonished when they say the driver cutting down the Gatso Cam on Bury new Road, Summit, Heywood.

"A mystery phone caller, using nickname of "Deep Throttle!" , claims that the "Camera Liberation Squad done it for the benefit of other drivers. The camera is a stealth tax inspector and not a road safety officer!" (How true! )

"But many people believe the attack was the work of a vandal. The crime could lead to a six month jail sentence.

"The camera was later put up again but has now been removed

"Safty groups say the driver's action has put pedestrians at risk for speeding motorists at an accident blackspot. Emma Reynolds of "Drive Safe" (Manchester's pratnership) said that in the last 3 years at Summit 3 people have been killed or seriously injured in accidents where speed was a factor.

"There have been 12 personal injury accidents there.

"Police were called after the camera was felled and after the culprit had left the scene - possibly in a white Cavalier driven by an accomplice.

"He is white, in his 30s, about 5' 10" tall and was wearing a welding mask and dark clothing! ()

"Emma added: "This act of criminal damage is putting people's lives at risk!"

"Sandra Dutson from RoadPeace (Manchester-based organisation that supports accident victims) said
"Cameras such as this one are necessary because it is very clear that speed is a factor in so many deaths and serious injuries on our roads. This act of vandalism is inexcusable. I hope this person realises what he has done!"

"More than 700 cameras across the nation have already been blown up, shot up or chopped up by bands of motorists communicating through internet chatrooms. Activists move under cover of darkness, targetting devices they claim to be making heavy assaults on people's licences and wallets. One group calling itself "Motorists Against Detection" is led by a shady figure calling himself Captain Gatso and claims to have operatives across the country!

"Saboteurs proudly display photos of burned out cameras, and use chat rooms to warn each other about what they call the Talivan mobile detection units.

( I get that info from the Prats own official websites and local radio

"The Heywood camera was felled on the day that Alistair Darling admitted some of the cameras have little safety justification and should be removed!

"Anyone with information on the incident should call Rochdale CID on 0161-856 8543 ( as if or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. It is thought to be the first really serious attack on a Manchester Scamera, although one in Wigan has been sprayed with paint and a Truvelo's lenses were sprayed with "No More Big Gaps!""
======
I note that they called the cops after the camera and culprit had left the scene! Actions speak louder than words!

Also - if area is so dangerous - why decide against replacing the camera? Would proper audit as requested by the "toothesome Cornetto" reveal dodgy siting?

I wonder if the Cavalier had blue and orange strips along the side?

That'll narrow the search down a bit, then.......

And the ID parade should be good......

Well, Ms Dutson, clearly you don't know what you are babbling on about.
