I had my 2007 XKR convertible in to look at a grinding noise when starting from cold that it was thought it was the timing belt tensioners that needed replacing.

I have now been told that it needs a new engine. How lucky am I as the warranty that I have with the independant that I bought it off runs out at the end of May.

Is this common on these engines?

How many miles? Seems a fairly young car to need a new lump but if it's been round the clock twice then maybe.

Hope you have a nice robust warranty with a decent claim limit. AA 5 Star with a £1k limit will be about as much use as an ashtray on a terrier.

Good luck.

The car only has 35k miles on it so not many at all. Luckily the full cost of the engine will be covered by the warranty.

What did it turn out to be then? I'm just taking mine in soon to get chain & tensioners done, partly due to mileage (100K) and partly due to noise, although mines more a chatter like something rattling rather than grinding, but noises are subjective. They said they needed to check as it could be the crank bearings which was a rebuild or replacement job.

I'm assuming it's the same 4.2 engine, despite mine being the older body (2005)?

I'm worried now, mine's out of warranty frown

I haven't currently been told what the problem is but it is lucky it was in warranty otherwise would have been a massive bill

Good luck with yours

Be interesting to see how much they manage to wangle out of you and how they weasle out of their "warranty".

"Ah yes sir the engine's covered but the cost of new radiator fluid is down to you since it's a consumeable and that's £247.50 plus VAT"

"Ah no sir we didn't actually need to fit a "new" engine, it's just new to your car. And yes I know it says Tata on the rocker cover but that's just a misprint from the new owners"

etc etc

Cynic? moi?
