Second Photographer at a wedding...

I'm helping out a friend as a 2nd photographer at a wedding tomorrow.

Question is what to wear? would a dark coloured suit be appropriate or would it have to be black?

Black would probably make you look like one of the wedding party. Other than that any smart suit and tie would do, I'd say. Why not ask Tog 1?

so even a nice sharp grey suit would be ok??

Its my first english wedding hence i aint too sure what the guest would be wearing as opposed to what I should wear

Nice jacket and trousers. You don't want to be too restricted when lifting your arms all day.

Works for me!

Most of the time I leave the jacket in the car because roomfuls of people get quite warm and you don't want to get hot and sweaty...

For me it is always a suit and tie and only in very hot weather would I take my jacket off. I just think the bride and groom and all the guests make an effort to ensure the day looks its best so I think we should too. It amazes me sometimes what some people think is acceptable, I've seen some videographers (always seems to be video guys rather than photographers for some reason) wearing shoe/trainer type footwear and fleeces which I believe is just disrespectful.

Black polo shirts with '123 Productions' on the back and a clip-art clapperboard underneath; yes, I agree. It's a carry-over from conference/corporate work.

I would say shirt & trousers, dont need a tie. Its the last thing you'll want blowing around. You're not part of the wedding party so going smart without going over the top would be fine. A suit jacket would be ok if its cold

I ask the couple if there is a dress code and dress accordingly. I prefer to blend in with the other guests if possible.
