E-Class 07 Suspension rattle (not ball joint / drop link)

I've got a rattle sound on the front left supspension when going over bumps at low speeds.
It's not a clunk clunk sound like a ball joint but sounds more like something to do with the strut mount. I say this because I had a similar rattle on the rear strut in my old Escort (this was the bolt rattling in the worn bush).
When pushing down on the wing there is some movement of the strut rod end in the mount.
I guess some play is normal to allow movement but I'm suspecting this could be the source of the rattle. It gets much worse it the nut is loosened a little.
Does anyone know if the strut mount cups do rattle as they wear.
Also, anyone know of an easier way to get the front strut out of the E-Class?
I've done it once and it was difficult to get strut bottom end over the wishbone.
ps This is the standard strut, not airmatic.
