450SE poor running - 3 "specialists" later still not HELP
Discussion
Hi,
I took my 450SE to TVRPower in August last year for a service, it was running poorly.
It was damaged when being unloaded off the trailer, i was not behind the wheel, quote for repair was £1000, but no mention of responsiblity or payment by TVRpower
Anyway some chasing and some month later i was told the car was moved to TVRCentral, hmmm...anyway....
Some months later and some chasing I was told it was at RT Racing...hmmm...anyway.
To summerise, having got the car collected last Tuesday, i have a car with front damage, broken bonnet struts, and a £450 bill for "delivery" to Sheffied and now collection..
Some work has been done, as in there is a new plenum to AFM hose, and a spare 350i working labelled ECU. They claim much diagnostics have been performed but no evidence, as in written to say what.
RT racing have been helpful , to the point that they recomend a carb conversion, but i am worried that this will take a way some of what a 450SE is about, and its £2k to do.
The car will only start on full thottle and then run on few cylinders.
I was / am considering a megasquirt, but then does that take something away like the carb, but the site recommends updating to "hotwire" before performing the upgrade ?
So, ECU changes, AFM changed, wiring visually inspected, is the resister pack likely, as in multiple cylinders failing rather than one or two? Where is the best place to earth the pack?
Help
Regards
Nick

I keep going back to carbs, and it makes sense from a hassle-point of view, and it gives me a running car, as RT racing pointed out, better running than not at all.
I guess I am worried that it would be perceieved as a step back and relative value of one of the rarer models woudl be affected, of course a non runner value is reduced anyway.
Performance as well, longer term as far as modifications and upgrades, should I or a new owner want to go that way.
Chedder.
Yes but in truth I am so angry its difficult to approach in a constructive manner.

IMHO Carbs will change the character of the way the engine runs and you can kiss goodbye to any level of economy. There is no reason that megasquirt couldn't be setup to replicate the pops and bangs on overrun and would probably run more efficient plus you would be in control of how much fuel was used on overrun to give the soundtrack without washing too much oil from the cylinder bores. I've always thought that if The Prince Of Darkness put the hex on my efi I would use it as a good excuse to upgrade to MS.
Its a flapper and the megasquirt website (altohugh bit confused over which one is original site now) implies i would be better to update to hotwire first then go megasquirt.
That would refresh the injectors, loom and stuff beforehand.
What involved with that though, presume a new loom as well as the more obvious stuff like inlet manifold up ?

AFAIK you should be able to use the same loom, just not use/bypass the resister pack. That would refresh the injectors, loom and stuff beforehand.

but as you said your need the later inlet for use with the new style injectors, but AFAIK they both use the same connectors.
I don't know why RT can't diagnose a flapper system and get it working correctly.
I know they are old and and not the best system. but there is well documented information on how they work. plus RT have been working on them for years.
There there was a full 450SE ECU/AFM etc on PH classifieds
If you can get hold of him and can get him to look at it, Mark Adams is not #1 guy for Flapper/hotwire systems.

By "better" I think they mean easier. As there is a so called "Plug and play" solution. If you're not bothered about being able to plug the old system back in again (and as it appears to be US why would you) there is no reason not to re-wire for MS.That would refresh the injectors, loom and stuff beforehand.

That the one, all other parts can be sourced and tested quite easilyEsp as I would have thought a 450SE would need a slightly more tweaked ECU than a 350i
Has the Camshaft been checked to make sure it's not that, as that could cause problems no matter what system your using.
Esp as you'd be surprised how much they can still run with a completely shot camshaft, on the 1st racer engine all I only had 3 working lobes, but it will still pull quite well upto 3500 RPM, we thought it was a timing ECU / injection problems till we stripped the top end and saw the mess the cam was in.
