Ford type 3 gear lever loose in gate

Hi, got a Type 3 4-speed box from a Cortina or similar. There is no sprung resistance across the gate (left to right). Does anyone know what controls this resistance? The lever's literally swinging around left to right, though all the gears do work. The problem is not confined to the lever assy - the selector shaft is the same, so I don't believe the lever's at fault.

I can't seem to remember any sprung resistance on the single rail RWD Ford boxes,your not getting confused with more modern iron are you?

I'm sure the reason will become obvious after you've unscrewed the top collar to reveal the gear lever ball and socket components.
