Today's what car - and it's a doubler
Discussion
I know, I know and I know. But I have to ask anyway...
If you had a budget of £5k-£6k total to choose two cars, and the cars had to meet the following criteria, what would you choose?
Thoughts?
If you had a budget of £5k-£6k total to choose two cars, and the cars had to meet the following criteria, what would you choose?
- Motorway cruising (one of the cars must be able to achieve > 30mpg in comfort)
- European touring & camping (fun on alpine roads, but won't break your spine getting there)
- Occasional track days (and possibly trips to the 'ring)
- Off-road capability (bashing around on Salisbury Plain, or even heading to Morocco to pretend I'm Ray Mears).
Thoughts?
OK, a little bit more seriously.
You seem to have too much compromise there. There are three things that won't fit together too well. For instance, off-roader will preclude track day fun or economy and economy/comfort vs track day is too much of a compromise so you'll end up with something that isn't great at either.
The only thing I can come up with is:
The 4x4 should be just a 4x4 so go as extreme as you like (full on bobtail or tomcat-type thing). Maybe £2k worth of v8 discovery?
Leaving the 30mpg cruiser / track day car. I think you'll need to go for as lightweight a car as possible (although recognising that you want comfort). In this case, would a Clio 182 be comfortable/big enough? Would a BMW 330d be fun enough?

Trouble is you'd want to take the STi campingin the Alps/weekend trips etc.. and it will never average 30mpg.This for everything else- http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2717631.htm
