911 (930 shape) Speedster
Discussion
Low volume, iconic, collectable and therefore expensive in comparison to similar model cabriolets. I know clubsport has driven one. Porsche club GB has a speedster register secretary and knows the whereabouts of most examples in the UK. They also had a very good turnout at last years Jamboree at Eynsham Hall/Park?. Expect a similar turnout at Brands Hatch this year.
Luckily for me I get the speedster wind in the hair effect from normal convertibles so don't need a car with a cropped windscreen.

I came close to buying one, test drove a couple...ended up buying a 1989 clubsport instead...
They are a bit of a mock up in terms of the weather gear. the cabriolet is a better solution...
However that really is not the point of these,,it is image and rarity, they look equally good if not fantastic in narrow and supersport bodies....if only they were not such a disapointment compared to driving the coupe equivalent.

were they relatively watertight though ?
From memory you had to sign a disclaimer when ordering/taking delivery confirming you had been advised the roof was not not up to the usual standard of water tightness etc.
911 & PW magazine did a guide on speedsters a while ago. I'll try and dig it out and forward you the article.
Seem to remember Dr Alex may have done a PH article on them. Edited to say his article was on the 964 speedster:

I didn't get to drive it in the rain so no actual experience,,but the sellers led me to beleive they let in more water than regular cabs,,partly because they have a one piece windscreen rather than the extra quarterlight windows attatched to the A pillar on the cabs.
If you want practicality and weather protection, then i would have thought that a boxster S is probably the better car,,,If you want the pose, image and rarity then the speedster is for you

I tried one before deciding to buy a Supersport Coupe instead. Nice to look at but not a patch on the SSE for the drive and handling.
Then again, the SSE Coupe is not as quick as the standard Coupe anyway. So, add that all up and I would guess that Speedster in SSE form is probably the slowest of them all!
Lovely looking car but could have done with about 250 BHP instead of the 231 IMHO.

Much prefer 964 speedster over the 3.2, both for looks-never liked the look of the 3.2 speedster esp in fat arse form, also 964 speedster is IMHO a far better drive- think distilled & roof chopped RS.
Hood was only ever descriped as an emergency soft top, so dont expect it to be bone dry inside, if its a good & not knackered hood tho I don't think its worse than a Mk1 elise or caterham for leaks.
Mind you that Paul Stephens yellow 964 stayed dry inside despite being a drizzley day.

Paul had that car for sale for literall years didn't he?
I've always preferred the 964 too - did consider buying one when I sold my RS.
There are a couple of impact bumper ones for sale thru PCGB right now, both white and pretty pricey.
If you buy a Speedster you'll always worry about adding to the miles on it, but it is a bit different to the run of the mill. Whether it's worth such a premium is a moot point - personally I'd rather have an RS if I want to be different and a cabriolet if I just wanted a soft top (which is what I've just bought!)

Rubystone, I now have my own garage, however I have previously worked as a sales manager for Porsche, Aston, Ferrari, Lotus,BMW and Mercedes dealerships. I took the speedster in P/ex when I worked for at the BMW dealership.
Are you in the trade yourself??
