On my R56 MINI cooper D the release catch in in the passenger foot well and the secondary release catch is on the right hand side roughly in the middle (i.e. centre of the right hand half of the bonnet) if that makes sense.
It's a tricky bleeder to find but once you know where it is, its not too bad in the future.

It's just to the left of the righthand headlight (passenger headlight, ie right one when looking front on)
FYI bonnet pull is on the drivers side in ours?!
Is that not the R53?FYI bonnet pull is on the drivers side in ours?!
In the R56 the exterior release is indeed a bit fiddly - I find the best approach is to lift the bonnet slightly and then it's pretty easy to find the exterior release which is in the vicinity of the "MINI" badge.
R50 - Main release is on the driver's side by your right knee; safety catch is (when you're facing the bonnet) where the radiator grill meets the bumper and attached to the car. It's quite small (about 1 inch square and may have a yellow plastic cover) but easy to use.
R56 - Main release is on the passenger's side by their left knee; safety catch is under the bonnet about a handspan right from the centre - squeeze into the bonnet to release. It's matt black, has a movement of less than half-an-inch and is awkward to use on a good day.
