Since when has this little gem become common parlance amongst the Arthur Daleys of the world?

I find it irrationally annoying.

Why? It just means "not metallic". Would you prefer "normal"?

Well I suppose the old fashioned term for non metallic would be 'flat' at least for me.

but these days with satin and matt finishes / wraps I think solid paint is as good a name as any.

It's always been used to indicate a solid colour in the UK, i.e. not metallic/pearlescent etc.

No, it denotes a car with non-metallic paint. It could have every other conceivable extra. A quick google of "solid paint" reveals all you need to know.

I always assume paint is non-metallic unless the advert states otherwise. Therefore I'll keep up my irrational dislike.

Agreed, there are plenty of colours where solid paint would be better (in my opinion), black, white, red, yellow for example.

Mettalic paint isn't always better. Its the same with leather seats, they are only really better if you care what other people think, rather than how good they are.

When loading a car on Auto Trader Dealer Edit a list of standard features for the car comes up, this can then be deleted, edited, added to by the dealer. For some reason Auto Trader always adds 'solid paint' to the listing on every car so unless you delete it it becomes part of the ad text. Most independant dealers tend to be quite diligent but some marketing girl at a PLC dealer will just enter the VRM and submit the ad with the provided text hence some of the crappy descriptions you see. There is actually a campaign to remove 'solid paint' from the list!

When loading a trade ad on autotrader via their dealer log in it auto populates the ad with all sorts of crap including space saver wheel, solid paint, rear head rests etc. Lazy dealers can't be bothered to untick the boxes and end up with an advert that includes a lot of pointless rubbish.
