Garage door options?

We have a traditional up and over garage door which is knackered. I would have liked to replace it with an electric roller stter type because it means we could open it whilst the cars are parked quite close to it. We have to park close to it because our drive is very short.

It's looking like the "headroom" above the opening, where the shuuter rolls up, is going to be too small and by an amount I can't really fudge - need 420mm and I've got 230mm.

Baring in mind a roller shutter with motor and couple of blippers is under £600 delivered (for me to install) do you know of any other options I might consider which will allow me to park close, still open the door, but will work with our limited headroom?

Is there one, for example, where the guide rails curve at the top, allowing the roller to be mounted further back into the garage - not just immediately above the opening? I am certain I could make that work. I simply don't know what it might be called.

If you haven't got room for a roller and a canopy door protrudes in the drive too much when it opens and closes, then there's two other options. A sectional door that lifts vertically on a track so doesn't intrude on the drive and then lies along the roof of the garage or a side opening sectional door that slides inside the garage. Both will do what you want and both can be electric operated if you want.

Do a Google search for garage doors in your county, you'll get loads of 'em.

The only problem I found was they all want to supply and fit whereas I'm a keen DIYer and hate paying some numpty to do a job I can do equally well if not better. In the end I bought the mechanism from these people and made my own cedar door.

I'm pretty sure one of the roller shutter vendors does a compact headroom version that would just about fit in the space you have (mine's very tight).

We have a sectional one that lifts vertically goes inwards under the rafters. A local place supplied and fitted and they were very good. Get a decent place and they will do a good job. Added benefits are extra insulation from the door and a rubber seal at the bottom to stop leaves and dust etc.

Don't know where you are but we used this place http://www.hayesdoorcentre.com/index.htm and they were very good (family business). Hormann electric openers are very good.

Gliderol now do a mini roller door with less headroom requirement than the old design. Not sure it can be fitted with a motor however.

If your existing door is ok you can buy repair kits to replace the runners, springs, cables, spindles etc.

you could then retro fit a remote opener... might be a cheaper option??

Thanks but it looks knackered anyway, and we would like something that didn't open outwards so that we can still access the garage from the front without having to move our cars out of the way.

Garador do a roller shutter that has a small containment box that goes over the top of the door. At least the display one that we had fitted at work last week looks maybe 300mm over the top door line?

Otherwise, get a sectional, our two are great.
