Hi All,
Having had my car now (2003 MK1 S) for almost a year the dreaded MOT is looming.
The car is de-catted and not having any cats I need to buy some.
Checking on ebay the price difference is massive, ranging from £120 to over £400.
Anybody have any experience with these cats? Naturally I only want them for the MOT so don't want to spend too much but don't want to get ripped off with something that doesn't work.

Thoughts?

I've got some of the cheap c.140 quid ones from ebay that I purely use for MOT testing. They work fine for that but I wouldn't run for long with them fitted as the internals don't look too strong. I can't pass without even with the Power chip.

Cheap ones are no good for post 2000 cars as they may fail the MOT because they do not carry the relevant kitemark

I take my decatted car to TVRPower for MOT, the emissions are always fine. I think they must put some cats in or something

Sod Cats. Find a sensible garage in your locality. Wish I could help there, but live miles away. surely making enquiries in your area could help. Do you know anyone else de-catted? another TVR? a scooby? evo driver? Perhaps they can point you in the right direction.

Look at it this way, every time an aeroplane takes off it probably chucks out more emmissions than your car does in a year. smile

What he said ^^^ . I do this for both the Tuscan and Evo. The MOT test station will probably just stick the analyser up the exhaust of a nearby Clio or something to generate an OK looking number for the MOT. It's just not worth the bother and expense of buying $hitey cats, and a couple of weeks later you'll just have two unused cats sitting in your garage. What's the point in that?
Otherwise it means there's a market in cheap cats, & with all the pollution involved in creating platinum etc based honeycomb I can't see how that's greener than your say ~3k miles p/a in a decatted Tusc.

Cheers chaps.
I've only just moved to the area so don't know of any friendly garages.
I'm not too fussed about having a pair sat in the garage for a single annual outing.
Next question regarding the engine management side if things; I'm assuming (hoping) I can just slap them on and lambda sensors et al will auto compensate for the change?

Your profile says you are in Worcester (I am on the Worcs Glos borders) Just get the car to TVR Power in Coventry and you wont have a problem they know how to make them pass.

Alternatively I can recommend a friendly garage near Tewkesbury and you are welcome to use my name and have a chat with them.

As above. Failing that just ask your local indie who he uses...
