Hi all.

When were the steel cranks introduced on the AJP Cerberas? I'm looking at a '97 registered Cerbera 4.2, would this still be using the early cast crank? And if so, after 46k miles should I even be worried?

Thanks.

Dunno. Someone recently posted that the early cranks were prone to snapping and I asked how many snapped out of the build per year - but no reply. I don't honestly think it was many and I'd assume after 13 years it would have gone by now.

I have a 1997 4.2 and it's brilliant.

I don,t think it was all the cranks only a bad batch, mine went years ago and it destroyed the engine so I had to have a complete new engine and i still love it had her 11.5 years

It's a fatigue related failure so the longer and harder the engine has been run, the more of the life of the crank has been used up. It would have gone if it was going to doesn't really cut it unfortunately. The 4.2 crank changed from 98 onwards for definite, how many of the late 97 cars got the new design I've no idea. Might be worth talking to some of the ex factory guys.

i asked the question once how many cerberas were sold and how many cranks reported snapped and IIRC the answer i got was thousands sold ,reported snapped cranks about 30 so i dont worry about it anymore if it goes it goes.
if i worry about it breaking then just think how many pump snafts, camshafts, gearboxes, diffs, blah blah st id never get any sleep

Ok guys, thanks for your replies. I can cope with a myriad of small niggles; my patience is almost saint-like, providing that I get pleasure out of the car. I just don't want to be on the receiving end of some spectacular failure, that's all.

Well, mine broke, and TVR changed both the design and the manufacturing method on the later engines. I don't reckon they'd have done that if there wasn't a problem. Personally I'd do my best to find one with a later crank in if you can.
