Am I asking for a beating?
Discussion
I've been runing a Subaru impreza for ages now and 'cos its so reliable I've been bagging money (ta Scoobie). I need (?) a 911 and from reading think the best bet is an early 993. I want to spend up to 25k and am prepared to do the legwork, and or wait as long as it takes. Have seen a thread about 993's for this buget and have seen adverts for 65000 milers with 2 owners for this sort of money. The questions are
1. Am i being rediculously optomistinc and should I keep the old reliable thing for another couple of years and add another 50% to the budeget?
2. Will i be disappointed at this money with the ownership experience
3. Should i just accept that I cant afford a decent 911 and go and buy another Scoobie?

I wnet form a Scooby to a M5 (very quickly realised it was shite) and then a 996.
so really it was a scooby to a 996. I loved the scooby, but the 996 is fantastic.
early 996 prices may come down a bit more in a year seeing that the 997 will come in then.
I had a drive in a late 993 which i did not really enjoy as much as I thought I should, then drove an early 996, saved up a bit more and went for a late 996.

Ditch the chav-chariot
get yourself a fiesta 1.1L (Popular plus) in the meantime and save up into the winter, then the 997 and winter slump will hit 996 prices hard and get yourself a 996 for between £25-£30K - it'll be worth it....not that the 993 is a bad car, it is great, it's just that the 996 is sooooooo much more.

Sooooooo much more common for a start.
Another one falls into the air-cooled owner trap

The 993 is a great car, but I think the 996 was far superior - better performance, handling, interior, looks (IMHO).
Being common (relative to 993s) isn't a problem for me. It's still a rare care on the roads - after all you could be driving a 3-series!
Standard 996s and 993s are good, depending on whether you want a more modern car or classic 911 with air-cooled character respectively.
My guess is that they'd bore you, despite being truly wonderful everyday cars.
For 25-30k I'd suggest a LHD 964RS or LHD 993 Twin Turbo. See the recent Porsche Smorsche thread on the TVR forums.
I am biased and slightly nuts tho', so please listen to the 993/996 owners as well. And test drive as many as you can to help the decision making process...
Good luck

The 996 is the more refined everyday driver without a doubt.
But the 993 has huge fun factor and will give you a constant grin. Then there`s the reliabilty and build quality of early 996 against the "hewn from granite" build of the 993. What about that bullet proof engine, no coolant leaks or pourous blocks to worry about, very low depreciation for years to come.
The varioram model has more mid range torque than the early 993 by utilising different length intake pipes in its complex inlet manifold.
You may struggle to find a low mileage varioram for your budget, number of owners is not important if the car has good service history. Many 5 yr old 996`s are on 3rd of 4th owners.

For £25k you are only going to get low to mid quality RHD 993`s. You could get a good LHD 993, for which you get VFM and a nicer pedal layout, but at a price.
I dont think that a 996 of any quality is going to be in your price range today.
So, your real choice is how long to wait for everything to drop down into your price range and that IMHO is anyones guess.
The reality is that everything will come down in price over time, but equally two other things are guaranteed to rise and thats age and mileage!
Choose carefully...

I'm surprised you doubt me on low supercar prices, as you're always banging on about nabbing a Superlight R for 13k
Maybe one day it will turn up
You really ought to do your research Mr P...
