I wanted to swap my aluminium fork for a carbon one.
It's 1 1/8in.

Found one on ebay, which turned up yesterday (a used Felt C3).

Firstly, getting the crown race off the original fork looks like it might be impossible.
(The headset is a semi-integrated zero stack, full name: Cane Creek VP A41AC.)

However, let's assume I can get the crown race off.

When I look at the steerer on both forks, the new one has a simply MASSIVE lip before you hit the crown while the old one hardly has any lip at all.

In other words it looks as if the width of the hole on the crown race will need to be substantially bigger for the crown race to fit on the new fork.

Now I am only judging this by eye, I haven't got any callipers or anything.

So, the question is whether all steerers have the same "girth" just above the crown or whether they are somehow all different???
Thanks

Hi mate

Unfortunately this fork is tapered wider at the bottom and you can't use it in your frame

From the Felt F3 product page:

Fork: Easton EC90 SL Taper CNT Carbon Monocoque Fork featuring Easton Taperwall Technology and Internal Thread Design; Carbon 1.125 - 1.5 Steerer Tube,

Sell it, get another non-tapered 1-1/8th fork (1.125")

Disregard that sorry I was looking at Felt F3 not C3

Can't find much info apart from:

Felt C3 (stock on F65) 2006 1 1/8" 586 g 230 mm steerer, Al crown and dropouts, carbon blades

Unless you have a set of calipers to measure it I would take it to your LBS

Damn, you have confirmed my worst fears.

Do you think I have grounds for sending it back?

There was no mention of any sort of tapering and the picture certainly doesn't look like it had any kind of lip, although it is a little small to see.

Or should I have just done more research into that particular fork?

It's common for the fork steerer to be a bit wider at the base, this ensures a snug fit with the lower crown race. All you can do is try.

Use a tiny flat screwdriver and use gentle taps of a hammer all the way round the existing race, being careful not to damage the upper part of the race itself.

You may need a headset press to fit the race onto the new forks

OK, perfect, thanks.
After a couple of thousand miles that crown race is fairly well welded on to the old fork.
There appears to be no gap at all between the crown and the race.
I will keep at it though, I think I just need to use a smaller screwdriver...

Your LBS should have a crown race remover tool - looks like this...

will be able to get the race off with the minimum of effort, should only take a second/cost a fiver or whatever.

Thanks for the info.
I have now checked the Cane Creek guide to identifying headsets etc...
http://www.canecreek.com/manuals/Headset_Identific...

They seem to imply that even with a 1 1/8in steerer the diameter of the hole needed in the crown race of a zero stack can be a variety of 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 or 1 1/2.

Arse.

It looks like the fork came off a Felt F65 which in its spec lists an INTEGRATED aheadset 1 1/8in.

Do integrated have different width crown race diameters to ZS?

I just don't want to put in the effort taking off the crown race only for it not to fit.

(Maybe I could just take it off and hack-saw it so that it was more flexible - like the compression ring? This is just my commuter bike after all...)

What makes you think you have a zero stack headset? What bike is this being fitted to?

Likelihood is that it's integrated.

Getting a crown race off with normal tools is hard.

I think the crown race normally comes with the headset, but you can get spares. Wouldn't it be simpler to just buy a new race?

Cane Creek VP A41AC is the name of the headset. Fitted to a single speed bike.
Isn't that zero stack semi integrated? This whole nomenclature seems pretty baffling.
When I got the bike, I hammered into the head tube two cups holding a bunch of bearings.
Then I popped on the crown race, slotted the fork in, added a split ring and dust cap plus spacer, stem and star nut to the top.
Isn't that a zero stack?

Christ I am confused...

Tried that.
LBS said buy a new headset if it is a cheap one, which this one certainly is.

However, I am even more loath to spend money on a whole new headset which then sends me a new crown race which STILL doesn't fit!
