Oh dear, i was all cocky in the vette but its been wiped off the side of my face

I was leaving work yesterday down the local dual carrigeway and got behind a Mercdedes E55 AMG, he floored it; got a little bit of a jump on me, but as the speed went higher the distance he pulled was greater! i was dissapointed and that thing handles as well

i dont suppose i should be that dissapointed though here are the specs.

5.5 V8 Supercharged.
1835kg (heavy but not bad for a large car)
476bhp
516ft lbs torque !!!

60 in 4.6 secs

Anyone else been embarrased when they though they had it in the bag?

My rough guide to the meaning of life goes along the lines of taking care with cars that cost twice the price of a Vette or cheaper cars that are lighter and often less reliable because they're not properly built. That way I can be happy with what I've got and not worry about what I haven't!

Main point to remember is that your Corvette does not have a supercharger, without that supercharger he would not have been so impressive.

How strange! We had exactly this same scenario just outside Chalfont St Peter last weekend.

The only difference in our case is that the AMG didn't get away.

I wouldn't consider Vettes exactly slow ;-), but the thing that was surprising was just how quick the AMG was in kick-down, against a Cerb in third gear: I didn't recognise the AMG from the front, and therefore I didn't gear down when he accelerated from a roundabout next to me (on dual carriage-way). Took us a few hundred yards to catch up.

Strange but true - automatics can be extremely quick
under certain conditions, generally being set up for maximum effectiveness in "normal driving situations" rather than for standing starts or very high speeds.

Thats the good thing about kickdown, If you push it to the floor you are instantly in the power band no messing, but then having more gears comes good, as 4th gear in the vette is mainly a cruising gear and i have to change to 4th at about 135.

Sorry to hear that, Alex!

There's an awful lot to be gained by being in the right gear at the right time, and even a 1/2 second advantage can have a dis-proportionate effect!

I'm curious: at what speed, and in what gear, did you start playing with this AMG?

A lot of torque though is difficult to overcome... and an extra 350Kg as well... hmmmm... tricky to figure out!!

Haven't seen an RAC man round here in years. Last time was when the starter motor went on the 911.

Yes the vette is an Auto, i was a bit dissapointed to be honest thought it would have been much closer, i guess that 516ftlb really counts when you get in the high speeds, we started from about 70 i think i dropped it too 2nd he wasn't moving then i changed to 3rd and he pulled away ended up at about 130 but then had to ease off but 3rd gears ending there and 4th doesnt seem to do much His pulling away was noticeable.

Who needs BHP!!!???

Starting to like these Mercs. Anyone see Top Gear and the 620 BHP Merc SLR? At 320 Grand I only have 16 light years left to save for one...

620 BHP?

Malc, just a slight tweak of the boost control on your Callaway should see that ...
