Just had my renewal letter through, and it has shot up (as per usual), despite no claims.

£169 they want, and looking online I can get a lot more coverage (inc warranty) for £153 less £50 cahback = £103.

Am I able to cancel my membership, and then join again as a 'new' customer, and go through Quidco for £50 cashback?

Yes. Or just ring them and tell them you want it at the cheaper price and normally they don't even bother to argue. There are several threads on here about it, just do a search for 'The AA'.

Matt, just ring them and they should be able to sort it out.

I spoke to someone at the AA who knocked £120 off my bill and was promised a refund immediately. I haven't got the refund yet (only 2 months later) so I'll be ringing them up this evening.

I got my renewal down from £159 to £94 by phoning helpline and selecting the 'Im thinking of leaving' option. I didnt even actually ask for them to give me a lower quote, the lady on the phone just gave me a better deal.

I guess the do it as many people just pay their renewal. I would happily go elsewhere if they didnt though....

It does work better if you actually haven't used their breakdown services in the previous year.

Just renewed at £155, for personal cover - Roadside assistance, At home, National recovery, Parts & garage cover for 1 car.

£4 cheaper than new members.

I renewed with the RAC a couple of weeks ago - renewal was £110 less some discount which came to £96, the online price was £71 or something. I called and said I would renew if they could do it for the online price, she came back and said "I can do it for £48 if that's ok?"!

My renewal quote for the same was around £200, before they reduced it (instantly!) on the phone to £100, plus £10 of Nectar vouchers.

I was using companies like First call GB and another i cant remember the name of. I had Platinum cover for about that amount.
I made a couple of claims over the 7 years I used them with no problems........but last year I broke down and they refused to tow me home. they knew I had to get to Heathrow and had me bent over a barrel. They wanted to put me in a hotel and fix it next day. I couldnt as I had a plane to catch.
£700 later my car was towed home and i had to pay for 2 train tickets from Weston Super Mare to Heathrow.
Not a good start to the holiday.
AA or RAC from now on, though RAC just doubled the renewal, luckily its covered with my bank nowsmile

Whenever you phone any of these companies, always go for the "Thinking of leaving" option. They always answer them dead quick, but never answer the existing customer number options quick. They did this to us on the last renewal - got a quote from RAC for better coverage, and AA matched the coverge and beat the price. Why not just do that in the first place, as we have been with them for 10 years+.

Unbelievable.

After the crap I had last year when I basically left and rejoined via Quidco, I've just had my renewal through (I say renewal, they sent me new cards and told me when they'd take the money rolleyes)

For Roadside, Homestart, Relay, and joint cover for me and Mrs.NCoT, it is £207 reduced to £155.25.

Spending 30 seconds setting up the same thing on their website, it is £134 for a new member confused

Going to Quidco, I see they do £60 cashback for policies of £100+, meaning it will cost me £74.

Is there any point in me even ringing them or shall I just cancel and sign up again via QuidCo?

Does anybody know their justification for this?

Is there anything stopping me not renewing and then starting up a new membership?

OK, does anybody work for the AA?

I have had the most frustrating phone call with an obstreperous woman there.

Last year they gave me a silly renewal quote, so I cancelled it and got a new policy through Quidco. At the time I vaguely remember them telling me it was being suspended for a year in case I changed my mind (WTF!? Yes please, I'd like to pay more than twice as much for the same service!).

Fast forward to this year. Renewal letter with cards and big bill. Ring up and I am told the reason for the cheap online quote is due to a first year discount. Then she tells me I have 2 accounts and need to reactivate the old one to do anything! I say I don't want to reactivate it, but she tells me I have to! Go round in circles for a couple of minutes.

Get hacked off and tell her I want to cancel everything with them. She still tells me I have to reactivate the account so that I can cancel. I say, yeah OK do what you have to. Apparently I will get a letter through with some new cards for the old account which I then have to ring up and cancel. What the hell!?

So, chances that I get billed for 2 years' AA membership at exhorbitant prices?

Will phone up again tomorrow to try and get somebody less obtuse so that I can cancel. It really was a hard sell - telling me that I don't want to waste my 14 years of membership. Why not!? All it gets me is a couple of extra breakdowns a year and money of AA crap that I never use anyway!? What I want is a smaller premium.

fking idiots.

Well, if anybody's still reading...

Rang the AA again to double check, and lucky I did as the stroppy woman hadn't done anything and the DD was still active mad Blokey cancelled my current policy and kept the old 14yr one suspended, so hopefully no DDs...

Didn't seem interested in the deal I had at the RAC though - oh well. £108 for joint cover at the RAC, no quidco deals unfortunately but I have 3 weeks until AA cover expires so will keep an eye out.
