Lexus lights - Removing the covers

Got some Luxus lights today (for details see the other thread running). I want to spray the chrome bit black as it's a little on the garish side in silver. Has anyone managed to remove the perspex covers successfully? If so how?

Podie suggested heating them up (the covers :sigh. Does this work? I want to try and get them fitted over the w/e. If I can I'll takle some photos of the process and post them up somewhere.

So, any help forthcoming?

I was hoping for some info too, as I've bought the same lights, and I'm thinking of painting them.

i know its a case that the horse has bolted but you do know that you can buy the lights with black surrounds from carisma? They are around £140 - so you can sell the current ones for £2300 on ebay and buy them as you want them

I would suspect that heating them up would be a good idea. any glued things will always be a lesser strength with heat. Podie suggested that anything Ford related will be even easier to break the seal....

I got mine for 50 squid, so I'll try the painting myself option. Was also thinking of painting them silver (to loose the mirror effect)

Got the covers off. Heating with a hair-dryer definitely helps. I've masked off and sanded down and I'll hopefully paint them tonight and fit tomorrow. Photo's to follow

Told you the hairdryer thing works!

Saw these fitted to a Fista (as intended) the other night. As a rear light/indicator/brake light I would say they function far better than original.

So, another reason to change!

Best not point that hairdryer at the rest of the Tiv it might fall apart

Forgot to ask. Anyone know a good way of removing the sealant/glue stuff left behind? It looks like silicone sealant if that's any help

usually silicone sealant just pulls off in a strip

you can try something like Mer which i not only use to polish the car but also removes crappy sticky things too

If it's not dried, meths/white spirit type stuff does the trick. If it's dried, peeling it should work, but if there's a lot you can get stuff that disolves it now.

I cut the perspex cover off using a small disc cutter and then just ground back the rough edge.Painted it with matt black emulsion no rubbing down needed had them on for 2-3 months now even the reversing lite is better.Only down side is the break light is quite small.........for a small fee i could be persuaded!

I've got some black sealant so maybe the best thing is just to mask off the remaining area and cover the existing sealant with black stuff. Oh well, off to get some spray paint and see what they look like.
