Hi !

One of my colleague is the proud and lucky owner of a 1993 vintage, straight 4.0-L Chimarea (not HC). The "problem" is that at the bench, there were 224 HP at the wheels before chipping the ECU, and after that 245 HP.
I know the british horsepower is more powerful than his continental mate (746W instead of 736W), but taking into account a 17% loss, 224 "wheel" HP equal to 270 "engine" HP, not the 240 advertised. And now, with 245 WHP, it looks like nearly 300, and more with the decat work. Ah, and the max torque is 465 N.m (342 ft.lb) at 2750 rpm.
So, now my questions
1- Is that normal ?
2- Why TVR produced a 4.5 version of this car ?
3- Should I tell him that his engine will die shortly and that he should sell it to his best friend (me) for a minimal price ?
4- How many 390 SE were produced, and how many with a left hand drive ?

Best regards,

M.

I think the general concensus is that TVR were in fact a little 'ambitious' with the figures quoted, even if the tests were done on a bench, at the flywheel, with few ancillaries. Mind you, its likely that other manufacturers were doing similar at the time. Sounds like your mate has a flyer!

Edited because I misread your post.

If what you say is true, he's got an exceptionally good engine for a 4.0.

Saying that, the rollers could be out, but unlikely. Where was it tested?

In a testbench near Bordeaux (France). The guy seems to do it all day long, so I hope he knows his business..

I was also impressed by the HUGE torque (25% better than the "original"), and the fact that you really feel it (and the speedo also). The car could do a 0-100 kph (not mph) in a mere 4.5 sec and a 0-400 m (1/4 miles) in less than 12 sec. Was I impressed, you bet !

How could I check if it is a HC or not ?

And do you know the numbers of LHD 390SE ??
