I've tried searching the government sites but I'm obviously incompetent.

I'm after the data for the 'basket' used to calculate inflation. I'm particularly interested in the actual calculation, the weightings given to the various items and the historic figures for the last couple of years if they are available.

I just can't believe the quoted inflation rate and I'm interested in why it differs so much from my own experience.

Tried the ONS 'site?
You might then like to peruse the BOE's 'site.
If you are concerned about your "personal inflation", remember that will depend upon your own particular situation.
That said, there are some who are a tad sceptical about the official figures.

This details the current baskets, the weights for each category and how they work it out.

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/articles/nojournal/cp...

You might the historical data in one of time series tables available from this page.

I don't think they publish the actual prices of each item though. If they do, it should be on http://www.data.gov.uk.
