Posted in www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=93863&f=12&h=0 but rather lost there, so posted separately here.

My mirror (the faired-in variety) has two "screws" (leastways, I think they're screws) holding an outer (rear-facing) frame to the body (part #2 in diagram in M15 of parts Manual (see thread: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=97543). The parts manual suggests (picture) that it is not necessary to undo these "screws".

Can anyone tell me whether they are screws and whether I have to undo them?

I can't see far enough down the hole to see what they really are. If they are screws, I think I'll need a screw extractor to get them out as I guess the slot/cross has worn away (but why?) .

Thx - Streaky

screws in mine. One was a nightmare to get out and the other would not come out (rusted to buggery)

So how did you extract them, Richard?

The access hole is too narrow for the smallest screw extractor I have ... and I haven't seen one smaller on sale.

Are they cross-head screws, and if so, PH (I guess) or PZ, or are they something else (hex, star)?

Finally got a good look at them (it's a question of directed lighting and contrast - no good on a sunny day ).

They were cross-head (PH or PZ) but very badly rounded over and rusted in solidly. Soaking in several doses of various "rust-busters" didn't induce them to move. The old trick of tightening first didn't work (no purchase for the screwdriver bit on tightening either). I modified three screwdrivers (one flat, one #0 PZ and one #1 PH) to no good effect.

The only option left is to drill the heads off. Oh, joy!

Unless anyone has any bright ideas?

Well, drilling didn't work . Now I'm waiting for a delivery of miniature grinding heads to try that approach - S

If all else fails you can get new ones from Trevor @ TET if you damage them.

But that means stripping down the door to remove and refit.

Seriously though, do I have to remove the frame, or can I replace the motor (got one from Wins) through the front; more gynaecologist than heart surgeon if you get my drift - Streaky
