The graphs simply illustrate what we already know, in terms of raw pace hamilton is one of, if not the quickest on the grid over an optimum lap, in an optimum car . . . . . . However we all also know, that to win races and championships requires far far more than raw pace, more so when your car isn’t quite there.
It's the measured approach to winning races and championships that seems to be missing, if he ever gets it, he'll be a multiple champion, if he doesn’t, he'll be remembered as a sometimes controversial, sometimes entertaining driver who made a few VERY questionable judgements and didn’t quite live up to his potential . . . .the same as dozens of other talented F1 drivers over the past 60 or so years.

I think Hamilton has been let down by the car the last couple of seasons.
A McLaren should have won the 07 season, as the performance advantage of the car was so great. The inter-team rivalry put paid to that though.
The car in 2009 wasn't good at all and I'm so impressed that Hamilton actually managed to win any races with it.
I also don't think 2010's offering was the best package but here was a sign of lack of consistency as two DNFs in a row ruined Hamilton's championship hopes.

Yet Schumi, Fred, Mika, Kimi etc all won championships in cars that weren’t the best on the grid . . . . . A McLaren should have won the 07 season, as the performance advantage of the car was so great. The inter-team rivalry put paid to that though.

I think the difference here is that they usually (except kmi) had only one main competitor. There is a lot of talent at the top of F1 now, certainly compared to 5 years ago.mchammer89 said:

Your right this is the only stay that matters. To be honest vettel is on fire at the moment and I believe that both rbr and mclaren cars are equal in terms of performance. Rbr has better downforce granted but mclaren aren't far behind them. I think vettel is the new Schumacher and those who say he can't overtake, just look at the previous race when he did 2 overtakes in his outlap. Lewis Hamilton 85

This guy will take a special driver to beat him as he is so cool when under pressure.

Measured approach..... In a nutshell. There's more to winning multiple WDCs than driving everywhere 11/10ths.Since JB joined Hamilton's team, I saw several good signs that Hamilton did at last "get it". Had he got it a couple of years back, he would already be a multiple World Champion now.

I'm still wondering just how long some of the F1 form judges here will at last come to the conclusion that the new kid on the block, young Herr Vettel S., is more than a bit useful. Here I have in mind those who suggest SV and LH should swap cars and then you'll see who's the best....
The young German after an initial 'iffy' start to his F1 career, has matured considerably in the two seasons since and still has much room for further improvement.
Oh yes, and he can most certainly overtake. To suggest otherwise merits a swift visit to specsavers.

vettel hasn't had a decent chance to overtake. certainly last year, where the tyres did not make such a big difference, the most memorable 'overtakes' he did were at Silverstone and involved pushing cars off the track and breaking piece off of them...
I think Vettel did a fantastic series of overtakes in the race before last (name of which escapes me now!). On his out lap after a pit stop. With the advantage of fresh rubber sure, but others didn't manage the same feat a lap or two later.That said Hamilton is the best overtaker in the field.
