Not really a what car to buy, but a what car to keep...
Discussion
Hi PH,
I have a real difficult car decision to make and wish to use your collective knowledge and wisdom to help me come to the most sensible decision.
For financial and sensible reasons i've decided to downgrade from three cars to two only.
I have three cars at the moment.
96 Subaru Legacy GTB - Keeper, not even consider selling or getting rid of at all. It is my P & J and will be for a very long time. This car is not part of the equation.
1992 Mazda MX5 - Need i say more
1999 Peugeot 406hdi Estate - Comfy, economical barge, always comes handy
The toss is between the two mentioned above.
My new insurance policy starts on the 1st of July meaning i have a month to get rid of the unwanted car.
The pug has tax and MOT, the Mazda's MOT is due next week so it will cost a little to pass (bushes and maybe shocks) but this will need doing before i can sell it anyhow. Both cars are realistically worth around £1000.
Insurance will cost £280 more for the MX5 the Pug is already paid for.
The car is mainly used for work. All inner city stop start driving mostly at peak times. In winter by the time i get to work the heaters on the Pug are still blowing cold air whereas the Mazda is blowing nice hot air.
In winter the Pug is more comfortable with central locking, heated seats, higher driving position and good visibility whereas the MX5 it is cold, low down, the locks freeze, you cant see out of the rear view mirror and the inside of the windscreen freezes too.
The Pug being a diesel is economical however it does have a large fuel tank so it seems like i am getting a lot more mpg however this could simply be what it appears as i still seem to be topping up the Pug as often as i topped up the MX5. I very rarely do anything more than 10 miles at a time in my Pug unless it is dossing on the weekend.
The Pug being an estate is very useful as i can take stuff to the tip, buy stuff from B & Q however i find that i always have the back seats down ready for another trip to the tip for whatever reason. Plus work starts asking me for favours. I very rarely need to carry any passengers and have my wife’s car for the domestic stuff anyhow.
So the big question is. Am i really saving any money driving the Pug? It is boring to drive, super boring actually but does seem cheaper to run now as i'm making this decision based on financial responsibility, etc...
What should i do?
Which one should i keep?
Which one by the sounds of it is the cheaper one to run?

sell both, and get something else for about £1500?
the MX5 economical, but rubbish in winter
the pug slow, boring and a source of works 'favours'
what you need is probably something focus sized with few toys in it, that will do the daily commute, shopping and stuff
It makes sense but i'll most likely find it hard to shift two cars in a month. Something like a good Primera GT... hmm the MX5 economical, but rubbish in winter

Well the cars have made the decision for me!
The Peugeot has decided it won't rev past 2.5k and the engine light has come on.
Stupid car!
Stupid french in lower case too car!
I've googled the fault and it appears something along the lines of trying to fix a code 66 on a Leggy so MX5 it is then.
Stupid french car!
Anyone know how much i can make breaking a 406? Anyone after any 406 Parts?
