Does anyone have any experience of selling a number privately so that the buyer and seller can have confidence in the transaction.

Is it fair to expect the buyer to post a cheque for over a grand and expect receipt of the docs? How can they trust me? I mean, I know I'm honest but how would they?

Would I just change the grantor's name on the DVLA docs and post it off?

I see lots advertised in Sunday Times, Autocar etc so people must do it successfully.

I've been advertising some numbers with dealers for ages but had no interest. Keep dropping the price but still no joy.

Cheers

Cheques can be reversed so it'd be you taking all the risk there. I'd suggest you go with ebay/paypal because there's a disputes procedure.

You can't change the grantee on a retention cert, you can only change (or add) the nominee. That costs £25 but the easy way to do it is fill in the buyers name as nominee, sign it, and they can pay the £25 at the same time as getting the plate moved over to their vehicle. Make it clear this fee isn't included in the sale though.
The reg will only belong to the new buyer when they put it onto a car. After that if they re-lift it onto a certificiate it would have their name as Grantee.

If it is it's worth about £6.70.

Ha ha no it's not - that was the number on my first car, a blue Metro van - happy (sometimes scary) days!
