Started saving for my next car recently:

I know about when I will be able to afford the great example I am looking for, but I simply don't know how to deal with the wait; all I do is day dream about the drives, the track days, the modifications. Driving me up the wall, I just want it NOW (I am of the 'now' generation too). banghead

Any ideas on how to deal with this?! ears

Well here's the way I deal with it.

Look at the cars you can afford now.

Not really the spec you want is it? A bit leggy? High mileage? A Bit clunky? 7 Previous owners all called 'Bazza' and covered in Halfords tat?

Because you know that if you bought what you could actually afford now, it wouldn't really be the one you wanted, and there is the incentive to save.

How long is the wait?

I know exactly how you feel. I think the hardest part is when you're half way there with cash in the bank, staving off the temptation to compromise and buy something cheaper.

You think that's bad, I had a period of just under a year where I had the money in the bank for my current car, but couldn't buy. Things were shaky at my old job and then I had a couple of months looking for my current role. Once I had started here, I then had to wait out my probation period before taking the plunge.

It was absolute agony having the money waiting but not being able to buy as I didn't want to sink a load of money into a car when the employment situation was looking so uncertain!

6/7 months. I could pick up a 172 or something now, but it just wouldn't be the same.

Good way to look at it. I'll keep that in mind.

Just buy with whatever cash you have, for the rest get a credit card with 0% on new purchases, say for 6-12 months, by your estimates you should be able to pay it off before accruing any interest, and if not for whatever reason, get a new card with 0% balance transfer.
