Any pitfalls?

Considering looking at a used car advertised in the classifieds... When I asked how many previous owners it has had the seller told me two, but that he wouldn't appear as he wasn't intending in keeping it long. I got the impression that he bought it if it was being sold to a trader tho I didn't query the status of the log book.

It does make me a bit suspicious but if he can provide me with a receipt for his purchase, and the previous owner can confirm that it was sold to him etc then would I be at any risk?

If the seller is genuine then they wouldn`t mind giving you the name of the previous owner to contact, also I`d want the reg number to do a hpi on it.

He wasn't intending to keep it long? Hmmm. Sounds like a trader trying to pose as a private seller. Leave well alone IMHO.

Sounds like a trader. (There was a Jag advertised recently as 1 owner, the current 'owner' had had it for about 10 years but hadn't registered it, so just the original keeper on the V5 - according to the advert. So not really one-owner then!)

At least you can make any further enqs with your eyes open - may or may not be a real issue. At least it's better to find out in advance.

How much cheaper is this car than buying an identical one from a showroom?

That should answer the question, if its cheaper then why not?
Most used car warranties are rubbish anyway as you will find if you ever come to make a claim so buying it from a used dealer will not give you much protection if it goes wrong.

No real pitfalls, name on v5 has nothing to do with title/ownership, if you like the car and its a good price why not?

Probably lots of hobby traders out there doing this sort of thing, just do the usual things; HPI, vosa mot history check, check all aspects before handing over any cash including aircon working, any signs of recent paint, any warning lights on, drives straight, as you will have no come back once you pay for it.

Phoning up previous owner is taking things a bit far unless you have a specific reason for it.

Its a BMW so as long as it has a FSH etc I could always stick one of their own warranties on it afaik.

If it is a trader posing as a private seller then what would be the issue? (except for them trying to swerve the sale of goods act). May have a look tomorrow as its not a huge distance from me.

Anyone happen to have ripe access to HPI or equiv, or even better check out a BMW's history??? smile

To my mind if they are willing to do that, what else are they willing/happy to do?

Ive done it before. Bought a discovery off a friend, who needed the cash to pick up a defender the next day. I had the cash, had it off him and wanted to sell it again. I told the guy, told him he could contact the owner, check the chassis numnber etc? He was fine about it.

But tbh, there was nothing stopping my claiming to be my friend and ive just changed house hence the address being different.

The main thing that would worry me, is that if he's a trader, has he tried to sell it via his business and found out it has problems/history and so is trying to sell it privately and thus avoid having to give it a warranty, the future comeback, warranting the mileage and guaranteeing it as HPI clear?

I know lots of people/traders do this as a sideline which isn't a problem in itself, however you have to think that they've picked these cars up from somewhere and are now selling them on at a profit with no protection to the buyer - better if you can pick up these cars yourself and avoid the middle man.
