For ~£400, I'd be looking at vintage Longines. They made some lovely watches back in the day, though they may be a little small for todays tastes. As a reference, I got this Cal 340 for ~£300, and feel I overpaid.

They also made many watches with a high-beat escapement and labelled them Ultra-Chron. The later ones have Caliber 6651 which runs slightly slower, but still as quickly as your typical modern watch. They came in a variety of styles and you can pick these up for the same kind of money, with change for a service, since it's quite possible that watches from this era haven't been serviced in quite a while. As with everything in watches, a truly mint example is likely to command a premium, but I'm a movement guy, so it doesn't worry me greatly.
