The indicator comes on and stays on when the headlights are switched on only on the o/s. When the headlights are off the indicators/hazards work as they should.

Sounds like a bad earth or the indicator wire is in the wrong place..

This is usually due to a local earthing problem when the two bulb can share a common connection, say on the live feed, but due to a bad earth somewhere, the current from one bulb finds its way to earth via the other filament, illuminating both bulbs, usually a bit dimmer tho'

Check all your local earth connections and also the connectors to the rear of your lighting unit.

Either that, or you have a piece of loose wire bridging the connectors on the contacts to the bulb unit. In which case you have to isconnect all the connector blocks there-abouts for a visual lookabout.

Had something like this, but different (as it goes with TVRs wink) . Fixing it was to renew the earth (pop-riveted) at the back of the indicator light as the other light in the same housing was flashing instead... This earth connection is at the back and the indicator needs to be taken out ( '86 350i series II) and not only the lens taken off.
