what sort of oil temps do guys you see on track ?
I was seeing 110 today after a sitting in traffic
is it time for a oil cooler ?

I took Steves advice years ago and use the best oil I can silkolene Pro S (although its changed name) often get a deal from Opie oils for 10ltr at £100.
I don't think I've ever seen my temps go higher than 115 on track. Certainly no more than 110 after pushing it in this weather.
I've seen 120deg in traffic, but that's because my turbo is oil cooled and I'm pretty sure the reading isn't right as I havnt been able to map it properly yet.
I use the same oil as bondy and its good for over 130 deg reliably and is one of the best there is... In fact it can go a lot higher and wont break down but oil pressure would drop as it gets thinner.... On idle I don't see less than 25psi!

I was running to up to 110 deg on track yesterday. I was doing approx 10 lap stints of Castle Combe, once an hour and the car was very hot but coping well. However on the penultimate stint the car would suddenly lose power whilst powering out of a corner, as if the turbos had cut out. I immediately backed off, but the oil temp suddenly went from 110 to 120 degs. Did a cool down lap and came in. After an hour's rest I tried the next stint, and had the same thing happen after 8 or 9 laps. Oil temp had cooled down to 80 degs when I went out. I've got normal Shell Helix and I added Slick 50. I'm glad I've got the oil temperature/pressure gauge, as the water temp sits dead on 90 degrees all day long regardless in my car. Also got the TDS.
Is the behaviour of the oil temperature OK, especially considering it was a very hot day yesterday?
Was the power loss due to my standard intercooler not being up to the job perhaps?
The car was fine on the drive home, but after a not very scientific test I saw the turbo pressure reach a max of just 0.4 bar. Must try it from cool.
The car was always strongest in the first 3-4 laps.

Firstly the water temp gauge is an on off affair, basically it gets up to 90deg and then sits there regardless of temp, if your temp goes over 110 deg ( I think) it then suddenly reads high, but not before.... It's like this by design.
Imo The power loss was the ecu backing out the power (via boost) because it is seeing the inlet air temps going high, do you have a stock intercooler?
Not sure about the jump in oil temp, but in truth 120deg is ok for the oil you run as long as its not old.

Thanks Andy - I can believe that it was an ECU decision, and yes I do have the stock intercooler.
A larger ProAlloy intercooler is on my shopping list, but not a cheap mod.
The oil was new, but maybe I'll use 120 degrees as my limit. So hopefully all behaved as expected for a stock car on this hot day. My first track day in it BTW.
Incidentally there was a race prepared BMW there, which had just had a £10k engine rebuild. The engine had previously died because the extreme oil temp and warning lights were ignored in a previous race. Oil temp reached 170 degrees apparently. As a souvenir they had kept a jar of the "cooked" oil. It smelt absolutely disgusting.

For a fully synthetic engine oil, 150degC is really the maximum continuous temperature. Of course, depending where you measure it, you need to account for any upheat. For example, approx 130degC in the sump bulk oil is usually +15degC by the time the oil reaches the bearing surfaces. Generally, engines doing tests like the OEM durability tests, where they sit on the dyno at WOT peak power rpm for 180hrs continuously will have a sump temp alarm set at 130degC and a shut down alarm at ~140degC.
when I've been racing i normally see oil at 110c but on the hot day last time it was up at 115-120c, i change the oil every couple of months though and use 10w60 helix racing oil. not sure what the temp limit of it is though. also 15psi at idle and 40 up the revs when its hot.
those races were 12 minutes but the next couple will be 20 minutes, I'm interested but slightly nervous about how the car will cope heat wise in the longer races, might need to stay off high boost to prolong the time between normal and max temp is reached, maybe just blast the high boost on the last lap if a podium spot is within reach.lol

I checked today and from cold oil pressure is high as u would expect. As the oil temp rises then the pressure drops. At full temp pressure is just under 20. But it didn't rise when I went up into higher revs.
Could I have it in the wrong place, I did t think so as its high when cold.

Low pressure when hot at idle is normal, this is the reason that Accusump oil accumulators were of no use as they spill their guts at a pre determined pressure (which is normally higher than that of tick over pressure on a Noble).Could I have it in the wrong place, I did t think so as its high when cold.
if your pressure isn't rising with revs when hot it might be that clearances in the oil pump are becoming marginal ( or worse bearing clearances
) but it I'd get the pump checked first. This stuff is what I use now really pleased with oil pressure and temps. £££ though

The thing is, I've had that gauge for years and had an engine build since then with everything upgraded. I do have a very small leak/weep from what we think is the welds on the TDS?if your pressure isn't rising with revs when hot it might be that clearances in the oil pump are becoming marginal ( or worse bearing clearances
