Getrag with right hand gear shift
Discussion
I don't know if this has been asked before, but it is possible to use the right hand gear change (in a right hand drive car) with a Getrag box?
I ask this because I have already fitted the right hand gear change mechanism as i originally planned for a G50 but i would like to keep my options open in case I can get my hands on a cheap 'New' Getrag rather than an expensive 'Old' G50.
I'm only intending to use the car on the road and limiting the planned LS3 to a max of 550bhp, so having read all the threads i could find on here relating to G50's and Getrags, i believe a Getrag should survive this kind of setup no problem.... but can i still use the right hand gear change?

I am no expert...but here is my experience with the getrag in my GTR.
Mine runs the standard getrag cable shift, centre shift set up with f/g centre console. I have trimmed the console in leather with gives a much more 'production' feel rather than the 'race car' (or Heath Robinson ?) feel of the exposed handbrake and rose joints of the G50 side shift cars.
The gear change is excellent and very 'production car'. The shift is very smooth, centres nicely in the gate and has a nice detent into reverse...I guess same as in its 911 home.
The engine that has been abusing my gearbox for something like 3,500 miles is a fairly brutal supercharged SBC. > 600hp and > 600ftlb on the AS dyno when new. I have run the car since a complete rebuild for around 1,000 miles and did change to the sachs HD clutch kit as I was getting clutch slip at max torque.
I havent spend hours thrashing the car on a track so cant talk reliability in that environment. However after 3,500 odd miles behind a very strong motor in 'enthusiastic' road driving the box seems as good as new...no noises and all changes very smooth.
To complete the picture the gearing is low in 1st (good for parking !) so I normally pull away in 2nd. The ratios are then well spaced, and fairly close, up to 180mph in 6th at my 6,700 rev limit. In all honesty I think the ratios would suit a revvy n/a better again.
So from my experience (admittedly somewhat limited) I would think for a revvy n/a motor for a high performance road car type build the getrag would be a perfectly sensible choice.
Whatever you do .... Good Luck !

I think if you break a Getrag it is either scrap or very expensive to fix.
Pay now or later (probably). Choices, choices!

There are plenty of people that can repair those boxes now, and Getrag now sell all the parts aswell were as they didn't at first. The only gearbox that might not be suitable in that range is the Boxter unit.... the 997's I was told are good for 500bhp and 450lbs..Pay now or later (probably). Choices, choices!
