I've had a Prodrive STi (check my profile) and still have a MK1 MX5 though it is now up for sale. It is the 1.6, but it is plenty quick enough round the twisties.

As you say, the two are completely different, but I much preferred the '5 as it was more fun at lower speed. The feedback is incredible, whereas the Scoob only came alive when really pushed.

For your budget I would be looking at a MK1...

Standard MX5s are all about steering and handling, rather than straight line speed (although forced induction would sort the speed issue). It follows that you should make sure that the suspension and handling are sweet on anything you're looking at.

I owned and tracked a standard '99 Impreza Tutbo and I have to say that I prefer the MX5 for its balance and light weight, which really does reduce the wear and tear on tyres and brakes.

The price on the car you mention looks attractive if the condition is good!

Look for the best you can find, don't worry about what Mk it is. Personally, I'd want a 1.8 with a Torsen lsd.
