Fitting rear speakers

I have been asked a few times recently about the speaker panel I fitted to my Tuscan. For anyone interested, here is the link.

I have since swapped to a Griffith and after swapping the door spekers for a pair of Kenwood speakers I had in the garage from my old MGF I wanted to add to these and improve the sound. For anyone interested in adding rear speakers that are larger than the fitted air vents here is my install.
I would like to thank the Surrey TVR Club for their article on fitting rear speakers which gave me the idea to bring the speakers forward rather than cutting the air vent hole to fit the 6*9's and mount them flush with the rear wall. This also meant that the speakers could be angled to point straight forward rather than down at the seat back which they would have done if they had been flush with the rear wall. Hopefully this picture shows this.

I used the MDF panel from the Tuscan to cut the speaker mount to fit the shape of the speaker. The guts of the speaker would be enclosed behind this so it was a case of holding the speaker and mount in place and guesstimating the shape of the the side pieces. The side pieces towards the sides of the car wont be very big due to the curve of the back wall. After these are cut and glued in place then the the bottom piece can be cut. Depending on the depth and shape of the speakers you are fitting it might be neccesary to enlarge the air vent hole slightly. The speakers were screwed to the MDF mounts and held to the back wall by two bolts which go through the mount behind the grille (see the picture above).
Originaly I had intended to cover the MDF "box" in matching carpet but after fitting them I decided to leave the bare MDF as it was nearly the same colour as the leather trim and I liked the way they looked, particularly with the fixing bolts showing.
I have also added a permantly powered Apple Ipod holder which I shall post about shortly
