We all know just how much fuel costs now. However I was thinking has anyone worked out the cost of doing 12k a year today in a a car say a BMW 320d and looked at the equivalent car say from ten years ago. I would assume it would be cheaper but the more i think about it the the less the gap is i think. If you look at fuel economy from the car ten years ago about 40mpg to the new car at 60mpg would the cost of doing the 12k miles be much different. Although i have said the 320d i think it would be more apparent in how say a modern V8 petrol compares with a old V8 petrol. I know people say we dont get near the manufacture huide to fuel economy but would this of not been true ten years ago as well. I might be wrong but just interested to hear what others thought.

Is it so difficult for you to work out?

More interested to see if anyone had actually run two similar cars themselves and see what they thought.

Think the more interesting thing would be to take into consideration the cost of a new mk1 audi a3 to a mk2, then take mpg, tax etc and over the course of the entire ownership what the differences actually are.

Do they really achieve anything approaching 60 MPG though?

For real?

My old E36 2.5L petrol will give you 50 mpg if you drive it across France at night sticking to 50 mph. I know I've done it.

Is the 60 mpg figure also gained if you drive the car unrealistically?
