I still have the original EPROM that came with the car (has a TVR Power upgraded EPROM at the moment) and was considering swapping them over. I suspect that the upgrade runs quite rich and thought I'd run on the original to compare running and fuel consumption.

Is there anything I should be aware of, eg disconnect battery first, or can I just disconnect the ECU unit via the multi-pin plug?

Cheers

Remove the ECU, and carefully prise the eprom out of the socket with a small screw driver, but try and keep it as near parallel to the socket when you do, or it will pivot on the rear pins and bend them. Once its nice an loose, lift it out length wise, and try not to touch the pins. These old Cmos devices can be damaged by static, hence keeping your fingers off the pins.

I found my earthed draining board make a good static free work area for this task.

I've just done this. No drama.

Incidentally the 'standard' 4.0 chip I was trying didn't even work! The car wouldn't run! Bought s/h from eBay.

Never mind, sticking with the Optimax anyway.

You should use a E-PROM Extractor tool to take the chip out over a screw driver as it could do damage to the legs if your not care full. as seen in this picture here.
