Are Americans better drivers than Brits?
Discussion
I have just got back from a 2 week, 2k mile road trip through parts of California, Nevada and Arizona and one of the most surprising things to me was how nice it is to drive in the US!
I drove through congested cities, on 4/5 lane highways and on remote country roads and have to say I didn't encounter one idiot! Most people drove at a reasonable speed (in relation to the posted limit), I wasn't tailgated, cut up etc etc.
Other drivers were also amazingly courteous at junctions and of my last minute lane changes when lost!
All you need to do is look at GG on here any day of the week to see peoples comments about the current UK driving standards. Within minutes of leaving the airport in the UK I had two encounters where I had to take avoiding action not to be involved in an accident!
Has anyone else noticed higher driving standards abroad/in the US?

..What he said..
AND
Ignorance from USA drivers.. Always on the Cell phone, have NO lane discipline.
It is always foggy at night (same as Chavland UK)
BUT
They observe Stop signs - even when in the middle of nowhere.
IMO 4 way stops are a great replacement for mini roundabouts.
Just this last week - we had a FULL-on powercut in our office area.. Buildings, traffice lights all OUT.
The drivers just observed the 4 way stop procedures at the junctions with lights, it was very pleasent to see and expeirence. I am sure if that was the UK.. Right of way on the main road would have been observed - nobody being able to exit from the sides.
If you think USA drivers are bad.. Go to Mexico..!

Jesus christ, absolutely no way on earth. The driving standard here is beyond abysmal. Its absolutely normal standard practive to carve people up left right and centre on the highway, people just don't get road rage over it because it is accepted normal behaviour. Multi car pileups are a frequent feature of any highway journey. Its terrifying driving over here at times.
Sorry, what?
Been in Houston for the past couple of months and the standard of driving is appalling - everyone is on their phone, indicators are all fitted in the BMW factory, everyone is drunk and no-one shows any courtesy.
They don't seem to have middle lane hogs here, but that is probably because they just overtake in whichever lane they see fit.

I'm in CA, driving for the last 11 years. The drivers here drive me up the wall. I get so mad when I'm driving that I think I may have developed road rage because of the idiots who are on the roads.
But who knows? Maybe the drivers across the pond are even worse. Try reversing - ahem, correcting - the driving direction, it will make a change for the better.

Correct. Houston drivers are some of the worst in the world. Mostly due to their obsession with using mobile telephones and being drunk while driving. They should make automatic transmissions illegal in the US and have cellphone jammers fitted to every vehicle by Federal law.Been in Houston for the past couple of months and the standard of driving is appalling - everyone is on their phone, indicators are all fitted in the BMW factory, everyone is drunk and no-one shows any courtesy.

Wow, maybe I was lucky then!!
I did see some people on the phones, less than I see in the UK though and had no problems on the freeways. A lot of drivers have their headlight/fogs on all the time but I did drive down a lot of roads that had compulsory daytime headlight signs so I can see why people do this.
I'm guessing a lot of the posters above live in the US, when did you last drive in or around London?
I do think the 4 way Stop signs work really well and everyone seems to obey them.
I did drive in San Francisco and Las Vegas and even at peak times people were a lot more courteous than you ever see in London!
