Scary steering wheel moment

driving along rather briskly when the steering wheel came loose by way of the rake adjuster. bit of a surprise to say the least ! but no harm done luckily except that the steering wheel moves up and down and is not held in place by the steering wheel rake adjuster, but i cant find any info or any pictures anywhere to check out what has actually happened and how to fix it, any ideas on how to fix it please would be rather welcome as i have something wedged between dash and steering cowling which is not ideal :-)
