confirm mileage on a car? tiv chim car been garaged for 7 yrs and has only had one mot in that time and the vosa site doent bring up any mot history, due to elapsed time, currently mot,d .. no service book ! and had about 3 reg plates over the years , not easy but would like to get some history on the car, also the speedo works but the mileage clock has stuck ( common I believe ) showing low mileage and belive to be true due to engine condition etc etc. But would really like to know its true past thanks all

If you can't confirm the mileage on the VOSA mot checks, then I don't think you'll get them from anywhere else, it was just paper records before it was computerised a few years ago.

You don't say what age the car is, but it is going to be 10-20 years old, or thereabouts, so any recent mot confirmation doesn't really prove much. Loads of people advertise cars, say 25-40 years old, and make comments such as 'MOTs for last 10 years to prove mileage. What about the first 15-30 years, which conveniently gets overlooked.

Your best bet is to contact previous keeper, if you can, and take it from there. Other than that, just use your own judgement on basis of condition, how it drives etc and price.

If the car doesn't have any proof of service history, and the vendor isn't very forthcoming, there's no way of checking what's been done over the years. Even if the vendor/previous keepers was/were able to say where it had been serviced, without having invoices, you'd be lucky to find a garage that is able to confirm after all this time, unless their records are computerised. Again, if they are, tends to be more recent.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with a car that doesn't have documented service history if it all checks out okay at the time of purchase. If you don't feel confident about assessing it yourself, you could always get it checked independently if you were serious about it.

When I first bought my old TR6 back in '95 it was possible to write the the DVLA and for a small fee (I think it was a fiver back then) they would send copies of the records they have on file of previous owners. Dont know if they still do this service but worth enquiring?

spoke with tiv club, and no joy however did speak with a reg keeper who had it in 2003 just before it was garaged for 7 yrs and verbally confirmed the low mileage so thats a start lol no paper trail which is a bit of a bu**er perhaps I wont pull my hair out ...but just drive drive drive and listen to the exhaust.. If history comes my way then its a bonus...
