the prodrive performance pack on my RB5 (and Turbo 2000s)was designed not to boost top end power, but mid range torque, more useful in everyday road driving, or something to that effect, its a pretty good overtake car, you don't really need to plan much, but it gets the job done quickly and (usually) relatively effortlessly

As much as I hate to say it a remapped 335d or similar would be a good overtaking car with a lot of mid-range clout without needing to change gear.
997 Turbo would be another remember hearing that in 2nd gear 40 - 60mph takes one second which is pretty impressive.
Saab 95 Aero when reviewed by Top Gear was also praised for it's overtaking ability with the rate it did 40 -70mph being quick enough to worry some supercars...

Most things with a decent sized turbo, as whilst they do have a bit of lag they will generally have better mid range torque for 'in gear' launches than an equivalent power non turbo engine.

Quickest and less fuss of cars I've owned was my Merc CLK500 V8 - 388 bhp, 391 Ib ft, and 'push the gearstick for a second for maximum attack mode' saw to that. Being NA there was no lag of course.

The BMW Z4 M Coupe was more fun and almost as quick as long as the road was smooth.

But the title was "good overtaking cars" not bikes, planes, jets, just cars

Without wanting to sound like a boff...

It depends on what you want to do. A good overtaking car will be anything with a good power/weight ratio and the ability to manually control the gears. A lazy autobox is awful for overtaking - especially if there is a delay or it doesnt kickdown upon request.
When you need the power on the wrong side of the road you need it now!

However, something like a Type R - will require work and some effort. It will probably overtake nicely but if you have your wife with you, who may be a slightly nervous passenger - she wont thank you for the noisy, probably yerky proceedure.

If you have say an AMG mercedes - a brilliant overtaking car, or, as eluded to a X35d, then the discreet progress you can make is more likely to go unnoticed. More so if you dont have to extract every available rev to do so.

Id say a supercharged AMG mercedes in answer to the origional question.

Griff 500, mid range torque is outstanding.
Plus its tiny so can slot back in to small gaps in the traffic easily

Third gear is the 'naughty' gear, this is true.

My Leon Cupra R is the best overtaking car I've owned - a lot better than my Fiesta at least!

Select an appropriate gear, a gap opens, floor it and pull out just in time for the huge surge of boost to catapult you down the road, before slowing and pulling back in. Would quite easily see off the "Speeding up when being overtaken" brigade too

I agree, my LCR was the first proper 'fast' car that I've owned, and I have fond memories of how delightful it was to seemingly overtake pretty much everything without too much effort after having slower cars. I don't think the novelty really wore off...

They 'feel' fast too, since they have quite an old-skool way of delivering the power. I would say that it felt faster than the Focus ST I had later, although the ST was undoubtedly the slightly quicker car.
