Right, chaps. I've been looking at second hand hot tubs on ebay (yeah, I'm a pauper), and I like the look of what I see. Seems you can get something half decent for anything from a few hundred quid to 2/3 thousand. I'd like to get one in the next few weeks for summer

A few questions for those who've been there before:

- what brands should I look at?
- how much should I budget to run the thing?
- what installation issues should I be aware of?

Brother is an electrical engineer/electriciany type, but factory based rather than domestic - will installation be anything that's beyond him, do you think?

Any general dos and don'ts?

Thanks in advance!

Make sure you buy a well insulated tub, running costs can vary significantly.

I've been out of the business for about ten years but American and Canadian tubs were certainly better built than the cheaper European and Chinese ones that have come into the market more recently.

How about trying a Lay Z Spa? £350 from Homebase, try it in the summer to see if you like them/ can get on with them/ maintain the water, (pretty easy but needs regular testing).

For £350 you cannot go wrong, then when it gives up, (mines' been going well over a year now). you#ll know if you want to check a couple of grand plus on one.

Are they actually any good? Just looks like a paddling pool, that's all!

What's it like room wise?

We bought one of those Lay Z Spa's, we had it for a week before deciding we wanted the real deal. For the money £350, they are great. (Our one is on ebay as I type)

For the proper hot tub we payed £400 for a concrete base, £350 for an electrician to install armoured cable from its own socket on the consumer board to an RCD on the outside wall to where the Hot tub will be connected. Whilst buying my tub I also got the impression that you should go for an American tub, which we got, and avoid at all costs the cheap chinese ones. I have heard of cases where people have been electrocuted from them.

Can get 4 easy in a Lay Z spa, 6 adults at a push! Yuou can get an oval one tha tis bigger too.

real comfy too as all inflatable. 40 degrees no prob in summer, better at 35 though on hot days. Spinning round and round by "running" on the walls is great fun with the kids too! Can get going real quick!

Go down homebase and try the demo for size!!

We got ours for £300 last year, then 15% off day too. I spent about 100 on decking and celotex insutaltiuon under the deck boards, that all sit on out patio, decking is nicer on the feet around it and better draining. In winter, we empty it, dry it, stick it away, and the deck even gets moved and stored too.
