X5 4.8 litres... mpg?
Discussion
Had a 4.8is since last september & had 30mpg on a long run sat at about 60mph but that defeats the object!
My daily commute is 20 miles each way & get about 21mpg,if you put your foot down though it soon drops!
I would recommended the 3.0d as its a hefty motor & not very quick in either guise so you may aswell take it steady & get more to the gallon from the diesel.
They make a lovely noise the v8 4.8is but it needs more power to drag the weight around in my opinion & think you would be better off in a powerful estate instead if you need the space.
Cheers Lee

Might sound great and have an M3 rev counter, but in my experience over 36,000 miles (in one year!) it's gutless and no fun to drive fast.
If you like watching the fuel gauge move whilst you drive along that's also a bonus!
Well I enjoyed mine and thought it was a lovely car for what it was - perhaps you were expecting sports car performance from a damn near 2 tonne SUV?If you like watching the fuel gauge move whilst you drive along that's also a bonus!

I had a good year with it, but never missed it.
That said, a chance below for a couple of pics.....

It certainly looked fantastic and is a great car to own (even with poor mpg)
I had mine when it was 6 months old, ex-BMW car with 2600 miles on the clock - paid £45k although it had a list near £65k and I sold it a year later with an additional 36,000 miles for £34K............
Those were the days - cheap motoring I thought!

I can beat that! 18 months old with 20k on the clock, £22,300 with £3k down and 24 months PCP and a GFV of £19k ish. £140/month and a hand back after 2 years because it was worth way less than the GFV! ETA: Wish I'd taken it on a 36 or 48 month PCP

I think its comfy & a nice cruiser but really needs more power to make it entertaining,i wouldnt recommended them to anyone, unless they have cash to burn!
We've got the new shape (E70) 4.8i SE and it's a fabulous beast. MPG wise on a long run I saw just under 24mpg but for general driving we're getting between 18-19mpg.
We previously had the older shape (06) 3.0d and it really isn't a patch on the 4.8 ... as for the comments about lacking in performance I don't know how different the newer shape 4.8 is from the older one but ours really does go when you want it to!
Ours is currently for sale as my wife fancies a change so feel free to get in touch if you want to find out more.

I think sometimes the sensation of speed gets hidden as these cars have such a refined feel to them but it just takes a look at the speedo to realise you really are shifting.
Exactly, I have a manual '07 BMW 550i with the same 4.8 V8 engine, only had it a month. At first it just doesn't feel that fast as the car is almost too refinded and is too quiet. However, when you do realise the speed is when you go to overtake a car, start the momentum to sneak out, look in the mirrors, turn round to find you've almost clipped his rear quarter, been caught out a few times. I average 25mpg in mine, but can get 30mpg on a run, but I guess the 5 series is lighter.

king awesome car so if you can afford to run it definitely do it! Sounds great.
