Ideal starter trackday/experience? (birthday present)
Discussion
Hi all,
Its the time of year i have to start asking the misses what she wants for her birthday and all i get is purfume or money...
I'd like to get her something different and a bit more exciting. She shows a keen interest in track based events i attend and is keep to ride in car with me but has always shy'd away from driving herself despite my offers.
I'd like to get her a good driving experience where she can go out with a professional driver in a sensible car and learn the basics and build some confidence without worrying about crashing my car etc.
The only days i have seen available so far are the kind of thing where you get 4/5 laps usually in something too fast to enjoy or learn much from.
does anyone know of any suitable days/experiences i can buy for her where she will learn something valuable and be keen to try driving more afterwards?
i considered a trackday and trying to teach her myself but i dont think a 200+ bhp RWD beemer is the best place to start.
Cheers,
Ry

I recently did an hours track tuition through MSV at Bedford Autodrome.
I had done a few 'supercar experience' type things but wanted something a bit more useful as I plan to do some track days and wanted to see if I caught the bug.
I thoroughly recommend this, although only one hour in duration I learnt so much, far more than any experience day. The instructor gave me so many tips and kept pushing me further, correcting any mistakes I learnt until I was lapping far quicker than I ever thought I would.
Upon arrival at the track day I went to the briefing with all the other drivers, and then was a passenger in the lead car for the siting laps to give me an idea of the track. Then the lesson started, we did half an hour then a break in the pits to have a chat about my progress (and a much needed drink) before another half hour on track and then a chat to sum up my progress.
It was done in a VX220 so was a great car to learn in, so much fun. Plus the other bonus for your wife is these lessons take place on a normal track day. So other people are on track with you and you learn track etiquette and how to safely over take or be over taken. It may therefore boost her confidence so much that she will then be happy to take your car out sometime.
I think she'll find it so much more rewarding than an experience drive which will be over so much sooner and she'll learn less from.

My instructor was Ryan Hooker, who was brilliant and who I plan to use in my car soon for further lessons.
