Roof box advice

Need to fit a roof box for the summer holidays to take some lightweight stuff to France with us but have a few questions mainly about security
Need to spend a night or two in hotels so whats better to do ie leave the roof box locked or empty it out and leave it unlocked ??

If it's in Blighty or near a French port, empty it and leave it open. Anywhere else it will be OK.
Don't make the elementary mistake of filling it with springy bedding so tightly that you have to sit on it to close it. That force plus the aerodynamic lift at speed will make it evacuate its contents on the first motorway you encounter and will leave debris for 400 metres. I'll be happy to do the rolling roadblock again to retrieve everything, however.
