Had to drive a 58 reg MX5 this morning. I'm 6'3" and found it difficult to get in and out of and when inside, apart from interior width, every interior dimension seemed to be noticeably smaller than an Elise.

Are the Mk1 and Mk2 any better in this regard? I was far closer than I'd have liked to the steering wheel and some more headroom would have been nice. The space around the pedals was similarly limited. All in all, I felt very claustrophobic inside which was a shame as the car itself drove fine and was nicely made.

I'm 6'1 and fit in fine. Depending in the seat position I do sometimes find I have to look under the windscreen surround. I tend to have the seat a click or 2 forwards and the back all the way back, rather than just shoving the seat right back. It means my field of vision is better, although my legs can get a bit cramped. If I push back I can't see the indicator lights which can be annoying.

I agree that much taller and it would be an issue. You can do a foamectomy on the Mk.1 seats though which helps.

Would it make any odds if the car had a folding metal hardtop (like the one I drove)? I wonder if the rear bulkhead is forward by an inch or so?

I thought all men over 6ft tall make mx5s look like those little motorised toy cars that rich children get for Christmas.

6'6". Was a passenger in an MX5 from Bolton to Manchester while I was in uni, feet planted in the footwell. I got out (well, nearly fell out) with two dead legs, not a good look hehe .

I find sitting down to be fairly advantageous. HTH
