Yes that's a for real event, one in which people die. 200mph isn't fooling around, and if people don't have *real* safety equipement, they'd best look elsewhere for fun. I just shudder when I hear of poeple planning to drive an otherwise stock car, where all their money went soley into the 500hp turbo...

Whatever... but it can be a harsh lesson in "Welcome to Reality and Responsibility."

Don't they even have a "Pantera Corner" on that track, named for one (or more) Panteras going off at the same spot, at really high speed?

IIRC Yours would not be the first. Have seen the photos of the wreck. Walked away thanks to the roll cage which again IIRC looked standard.

I think Kurt Dobson www.spectrum5racing.com was there with his GTR a few years ago, but I didn't know there was an Ultima crash. Do you have the details and photos, Steve?

It ran off a corner and rolled down the hillside. Think it also burned. The guy got out with cuts/bruises etc.

I remember those photos too, but I think that was some hill climb event in the USA, I've tried searching but can't for the life of me find it. Pike's Peak rings a bell but my memory's shocking

Attached them to the wrong event, sorry.

As I said, the roll cage looks fine after a 400 foot roll down the hillside.

You got the right state though!

Pikes Peak in an Ultima would be pretty scary. It's just a dirt track (albeit a wide and well graded one)... the air's pretty thin up at the top too.

The Virginia City Hill Climb (VCHC) was held just "up the road" from me (about 40 miles). After 31 years, it will not be running again in June (Audi Quattro Club). The Ferrari Club may still have their September event.

I have been to watch this amazing 2-day race 3 times now. These cars fly! Some more than others. Glad the guy was okay. Does anyone know if he has another Ultima?

More VCHC Photos

Pike's Peak is just outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado. I have had the pleasure of driving that road many times as well. Lived in Denver (60 miles away) from '72-'86. There's a restaurant at the top (14,110 feet) and I have seen people fall off their bar stools from the altitued, rather than the beer.

The Ultima that crashed was at the Virginia City Hillclimb a few years back, It was a red sports as I recall. The driver was a pro-drving instructor, don't think it was his car though. It crashed and burned.

Yep, a Sports model. I met the owner at Knotts Berry Farm show a few weeks before it crashed at VCHC. What an amazing sound from that engine! This was my first encounter with an Ultima - the dream started that day! The same car had run at Run-and-Gun shortly before and destroyed all competition, but for one Cobra on the drag strip. Kit Car magazine had a nice article about the R&G event, and pics from Knotts Berry Farm show me talking to the owner.

That was a Mk4 Sport. Not a GTR. I remember reading about it. It was a while back now. Some time about 97 or 98 I think.
