Enormous Stone chip, Advice please.

Been out in the Grif today and seem to have picked up an enormous stone chip in the rear edge of the boot. A whole chunk of car has gone missing. The wound is about 3mm deep and 5mm wide. I have some paint, but obviously need to fill the crater first. I have never had to repair a plastic car before, do I use standard filler or is there something specifically for fibreglass ? Any advice gratefully received, as it looks horrible.

IIRC you can get proper fibreglass repair kits. Halfords?

doubt that'll be much good. its a patching kit for splits etc. consisting of matting, resin.

i think you'll need to seal the gash, possibly after cutting, then fill, the seal again before taking down and painting.(sealing with resin)

halfords will do what you need, but pick up one of their books, by the haynes etc. should do one for GRP.


i'm sure someone will post with a better explanation tho.

Indeed. Before my other half (Anita) sold her Audi they took out a fairly deep dent on the bonnet. After they'd finished I couldn't tell it had been there in the first place, very good job.

Only trouble is if you have an unusual paint finish they don't guarantee an exact match. But you said you have some paint?

Tried two high street car bit shops. Opinion ( of the 12 year old assistants) seemed to be that standard P38 filler was the stuff to use. I figured that if I had a go at it and it looks horrible I can hook out the filler and employ somebody who says they know what they are doing. So I filled the hole, which is right of the edge of the boot lid. Smoothed it down with a very fine file lubricated with T Cut, and dobbed on a bit of paint. After a couple of days I will give it another coat and hopefully a buff with some rubbing compound after a weak or so should make it disappear.
