E39 M5 brake upgrade advice

Hi all,

The pads on my E39 M5 will need replacing shortly and I have been thinking about my options. I don't really want to spend £££ on upgrading the entire system, but am considering taking the opportunity to change pads and maybe fluid.

Just to give a bit more context, use is primarily road though I may look to do the occasional track day at some stage.

I have done a bit of searching and Pagid 'Blue' pads look like possibilities. Does anybody have experience of these? What is the performance like for road use - i.e. do they need to be up to temperature to work properly and is there much/any squeak with them? Any other suggestions?

I use RS29's all round, there is some squeal and dust with them but nowhere near what most talk about! And they stop from cold and then even more so when there's some heat in them.

EBC Yellow Stuffs used here, made a noticed difference over OEM. Still fade though.

Guys, thanks for all the responses - much appreciated.

In respect of the yellows - both Pagid and EBC - my understanding was they were more track oriented. My track use would be 'occasional' (no more than one or two sessions per year) - hence my initial thoughts along the lines of the Pagid blues, which seemed more of a road/track compromise. What made you guys go for the yellows?

In terms of the Ferrodos, how are these for road use? Squeak? Need temperature? Also, have you tried these on the track?

Also, is everybody running their respective choices on standard discs, or is that something than needs to be taken into consideration too?

I believe that the Pagid's are excellent, but it was my mechanic that recommended the 2500's to me and he is a regular 'spanker' of his M5 at Knockhill, which is far from a 'flowing' curcuit!!

At the end of the day, our beasts are 1850kgs machines with a less than perfect brake system (floating calipers.......)

At least the new F10 M5 will come with decent 6pots and a poss carbon option.....

Who needs brakes anyway.....

Before I fitted the AP 6 pots, one of the first mods I did to the M5 was to replace all the hoses with Goodridge braided hoses. That made quite a difference and is a must do really.
Then add some decent pads (I stayed with genuine BMW pads then went to Yellowstuff I think) and that should give as excellent brakes but any sort of fast driving or tracking then up grade to Stoptech or AP's (or Brembos if you are flush) and they will transform the car.
Upgrading to decent front brakes is in my opinion the best mod you can do to the e39 M5

Still on the same pads and discs since my original post in 2011 ! Mine were fitted by Evolve and cannot remember what pads they used. I dont track it but the car gets driven every week. Will have a look at some paperwork and report back. I do know that the standard 18" wont fit !
