Evening all.

First of all - apologies for yet another 'What car?

Criteria is max £1.5k, 5 door, very economical.

Am I correct in thinking diesels have a greater chance of costing mega beans if they go wrong at this age?

It looks like I can get a better condition petrol when compared to the relevant diesel. For example, petrol focii are within range.

What do you think?

Many thanks

MG ZS 1.8

Ignore the OMG HGF remarks, they seem to be more prevalent on the bigger engines (plus this one's been rebuilt). Seller says 35mpg+ and I used to regularly see 40mpg on a motorway cruise. They drive fantastically as well, so you'll be able to have a bit of fun while being economical.

Alternatively I haven't searched for one but the Mk3 Golf GTI I was leant for a while averaged around 35mpg on the motorway and was a real hoot to drive.

Mk1 Focus sounds pretty much ideal. They did a 1.4 which I'd imagine is pretty abysmally slow, but also fairly frugal for a car of it's size. Ford parts are pretty cheap as a rule and they sold so many you should be able to find one perfect for you.

Do not whatever you do buy an Astra (see my garage)! Alternatively if you fancy a gamble, Fiat Stilo? Friend had one and was fantastically equipped for the price and he had no issues with his. You pays your money, you takes your chances though I guess.

I'd personally steer away from Diesel unless you're doing biggish mileage anyway.

Cheers so far chaps.

Average mileage is about 30miles per day. Would be changing from a 2.3l turbo Saab 9-5, so pretty much anything else would be more economical. I'm going for gold though!

Picked up a tidy low mileage 2002 Focus (1.6 Zetec) for £1400 (after haggling) and it's a cracking car. If you go slightly older there is a bigger choice, mate just got a 1999 Passat 1.9TDi for £1200, higher mileage but it's in great nick.

First tank of mixed I used got me about 180 to 15 litres, second tank of 15 litres got me about 160, on my third tank now and i put in about 25 litres, pushed the boat out. Took me to 1/2 a tank.

I have 1/4 of a tank left and have done about 130 miles.

They say expect about 600 per tank, or on extra urban about 12 miles per litre.

Makes a change to my other car at least!

Keep meaning to do a calculation frown. Manual quotes 40.6mpg combined. It's doing better than my old MX-5 so I'd guess mid to late 30s.

Mum has a MK3 Mondeo 2.0TDCi and that does around 50 (and earlier ones are within budget) but I don't find it as nice to drive.

there should be some 00-02 corolla, 01 civic, reliable despite mileage.
there should be also some post 2001 diesel in new tax bands but mileage may be far higher
